Fish Species
Despite our name, East Devon Shellfish supply a wide variety of fish. These include SPRAT (Spratus spratus), MACKEREL (Scomber scombrus), PILCHARD (Sardina pilchardus), HERRING (Clupeeea harengus) and HORSE MACKEREL (Caranx trachurus) as well as CUTTLEFISH (Sepia officinalis), SCALLOP (Pecten maximus), and WHELKS (Buccinum undatum), furthermore processing is guaranteed within nine hours of catching. Other species of fish are also readily obtainable through our network of buyers at Brixham, Plymouth and Newlyn Markets.
We pride ourselves that ninety percent of all fish landed are from our carefully selected and monitored "Day boats" which have fished for E.D.S. for many years. They all have fully refrigerated holds or chilled water tanks depending on the species of fish. The fish is frozen to a core temperature of -30 degrees Centigrade, and the holding rooms at -27 degrees C, to maintain the highest standards of quality. All transportation facilities and fish collection bins are insulated thus maintaining quality and ensuring freshness right up to arrival at the factory.
